one of my favourite linguistic phenomena/in-jokes is spanish potato chips being “ham-flavored, probably”

y’see because spain and portugal are so close, labels in stuff like food, shampoo, etc often come in portuguese as well as spanish

this brand of chips, Lay’s, displays the flavor in spanish and portuguese, resulting in ham-flavored chips looking like this:

with “jamón” being spanish and “presunto” being portuguese

however, “presunto” is also a spanish adjective, meaning “presumed” (or suspected)

so you have this in-joke going where spanish chips taste like ham, presumably

Though the carnage of Hurricane Harvey is currently dominating mainstream media, Texas isn’t the only part of the world being ravaged by flooding. International news coverage has largely ignored the torrential rainfall that has been devastating South Asia for almost the entire month of August, and it’s time for us all to start talking about it.

Across India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, record amounts of heavy monsoon rains have caused disastrous flooding and landslides. Thousands of homes have become completely submerged, poor villages have absolutely no access to food and medicine, and nearly 1200 people have died - including children. Millions have been displaced, and are now wandering the region homeless and searching for help.

In case your local news station hasn’t been reporting on it, here are  photos from the scene that you won’t soon forget. The GlobalGiving Foundation is working with a number of charities and aid organisations to provide relief to the many groups affected by these events, and you can learn more about it here.

this is so important

Also important information: A cop cannot arrest you for something you already took. You can tell a cop to his face that you just injected black tar heroin in your veins and as long as you don’t currently have any on you (including things like syringes or residue in a pipe), there’s fuck all he can do about it.

I take police reports for a living. The number of people who will happily tell someone “Well officer, this fight started because I smoked crack cocaine earlier,” is astounding and also not at all illegal. The criminal charge is for Possession of a Controlled Substance. If you don’t possess any at the time, there’s no crime. The only thing you can get dinged for is if you’re actively on a drug and driving, in which case - DUI.

Please, please, please tell EMTs what you took. They’re not going to rat you out to the cops and even if they did, you will still be okay.

Spreading the word, being honest with paramedics and doctors can save your life
